Produce in Season in August

Figs

Figs are harvested when fully ripe—they should be soft to the touch and jammy inside—so handle them with care. It’s best to eat fresh figs within a few days, though you can extend their shelf-life by refrigerating them in a single layer. Deep purple mission figs bring honey flavor to savory applications (cheese board or grain bowl, anyone?), and meld with sweet ones just as well.

Rainier Cherries

Rainier cherries are a cross between the Bing and Van cherry varieties, giving them a golden yellow hue with a red blush. They’re considered a more premium type of cherry and are one of the sweetest varieties of this stone fruit.

Cara Cara Oranges

The seedless Cara Cara is a medium-sized citrus with minimal pith that’s easy to peel. What’s really special is its deep orange rind and blood-orange interior. (It is a cousin to the blood orange, after all!) Cara Cara is delicious in ceviche with jalapeño, and it tames greens like spicy arugula and bitter radicchio.

Asian Pear

This crunchy fruit reaches ripeness beginning in early August, just in time to bridge that awkward gap between the summer and fall produce calendars. In size, texture, flavor, and juiciness, it masquerades as a blend of apple and pear, though Asian pears aren’t directly related to apples.

Bi-Color Grapes

Hailing from California, this mix of red and green grapes includes the two most common varietals, sure to please any fruit lover at the table. Red and purple grapes tend to be a bit juicier and sweeter, while green grapes have a crisper bite and slightly sour flavor profile.

Thomcord Grapes

A combo of Thompson and Concord grapes, the Thomcord is seedless hybrid coming from our friends at Fruit World. They boast a classically grapey flavor with an easily edible skin, great for snacking or sharing with the kiddos.

Morro Bay Avocado

Morro Bay Avocados are premium hass avocados grown in northern California. And they really do save the best for last, since these rich, creamy, flavorful, and smooth babies are the last avocados harvested at the end of the growing season.

Hot Pepper Medley

From jalepeños to habaneros, hot peppers are back with a vengeance. Check out our complete guide to peppers, including a quick breakdown of the Scoville scale to help you see where the heat’s at this August.

Organic Mixed Cherry Tomatoes

If you’re looking for a snackable tomato, this is the one. These round, bite-sized tomatoes are sweet and juicy with a snappy skin. Great eaten raw, tossed into salads, or skewered and grilled. Even better, we sell ‘em in compostable packaging.

Heirloom Tomatoes

Stock up on this mega-sized, odd-shaped tomato while you can—heirloom season is short. These tomatoes have a rich, unique flavor that doesn’t require much preparation. Simply slice, season with salt and pepper, and get snacking.

Golden Berries

These small, juicy berries have a tart ‘n tangy profile, similar to tropical fruits like mango and pineapple. And if you don’t think you’ve tried them, you may have met these little guys by a different name, like gooseberries, Inca berries, and Peruvian groundcherries.

Kiwi Berries

These may not technically be berries, but they are called kiwi berries. They look and taste just like full-sized kiwis, but these ones are so small, you can snack on ‘em whole—skin and all!

Blueberries

The blueberries you know and love are back and better than ever for August. Bite-sized and bursting with mildly sweet flavor, blueberries are best added to smoothies, topped on parfaits, or simply eaten raw as a mid-morning snack.

Blackberries

From the brambled to your door, we can’t wait to ship peak-season blackberries in August. These inky dark berries are tart, sweet, and oh-so juicy, making them a perfect addition to smoothies, salads, parfaits, and even pizza (trust us).

Organic Strawberries

There are so many ways to enjoy this heart-shaped berry, though we’re with you when it comes to enjoying them fresh on their own. And if you’re not up for eating those little leafy greens, you can use them to make a delightfully sweet strawberry top syrup.

Salad Greens

Fresh and fibrous, this category of greens covers everything from lettuce to arugula, cabbage, frisee, escarole, romaine, and more. Did someone say late-summer salads?

Rambutan

This spiky tropical fruit has a juicy and sweet center with a soft, jelly-like texture, similar to lychees. They have a slight sweetness with a bit of acidity, similar to sweet green grapes, and are often compared to other tropical fruits, like longan, pulasan, and quenepa.

Red Flesh Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit can come in a handful of colors—both inside and out. And just like with berries, the deeper the red hue is inside your dragon fruit, the sweeter it’ll be, so as summer comes to a sweet conclusion, we can’t wait to get our hands on the sweetest variety of these tropical fruits.
