If you’ve ever stared at a meat label and wondered what phrases like grass-fed, free-range, or USDA Prime actually mean—you’re not alone. Whether you’re shopping for ethically raised meat, grass-fed beef, regenerative beef, or the best butcher blend ground beef, it’s important to understand what these terms signal about how your food was sourced and produced.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common terms you’ll see when shopping for meat delivery and seafood delivery—so you can buy with confidence and intention.
Grades of Meat: USDA Prime vs. Choice
USDA Prime: This is the highest grade of beef assigned by the USDA, known for abundant marbling and tenderness. It’s often used in restaurants and premium butcher shops. Great for grilling and special occasions.
USDA Choice: Slightly lower in marbling than Prime but still high quality, USDA Choice is widely available and offers a good balance of tenderness, flavor, and price.
USDA Select: Leanest of the three meat grades, often less tender and juicy. Best used in slow-cooked recipes.
Grass-Fed vs. Grass-Finished
Grass-Fed Beef: Animals primarily eat grass and forage for most of their lives, but may be finished on grains. Grass-fed beef is lower in fat and often higher in omega-3s. If you’re looking to buy grass-fed beef, be aware that standards can vary—look for certified labels when possible.
Grass-Finished Beef: These animals eat only grass and forage for their entire lives. It’s the strictest form of grass-fed beef, and often the most nutrient-dense. Commonly used in regenerative meat programs.
Grass-Fed Beef Tallow: Rendered fat from grass-fed cattle—popular in paleo diets and keto cooking due to its rich flavor and high smoke point.
Free-Range vs. Pasture-Raised
Free-Range: Commonly used for poultry, free-range chickens and other animals have access to the outdoors. However, the quality of life and time spent outdoors can vary widely.
Pasture-Raised: A step up from free-range. Animals spend the majority of their lives grazing on pasture, which generally means better animal welfare and a more natural diet. If you’re comparing free-range vs pasture-raised, pasture-raised is typically more humane and sustainable.
Organic, Non-GMO, and Hormone-Free Meat
USDA Organic: Animals are fed organic, non-GMO feed, have outdoor access, and are raised without synthetic pesticides or antibiotics. Organic meat is ideal for those looking to minimize exposure to additives and support environmentally friendly farming.
Non-GMO Meat: Indicates the animals were fed a diet free from genetically modified organisms. Look for Non-GMO Project verification or USDA Organic for assurance.
Hormone-Free Meat: The animal was raised without added growth hormones. Hormones are banned in poultry and pork, but can still be used in conventional beef production.
Raised Without Antibiotics: Means no antibiotics were administered during the animal’s lifetime, reducing antibiotic resistance risks for humans and animals.
Seafood Labels: Wild-Caught vs. Farmed
Wild-Caught: Fish or shellfish harvested from their natural habitats. Wild-caught seafood tends to have a lower carbon footprint, especially when sourced sustainably.
Responsibly Farmed & Ethically Sourced: Refers to aquaculture operations that follow eco-friendly, traceable practices—such as fine mesh nets and water quality monitoring—to support the health of native ecosystems and fish populations.
Emerging Labels and Concepts
Regenerative Beef & Regenerative Meat: Grown using regenerative agriculture methods that restore soil health, capture carbon, and support biodiversity. Great for eco-conscious consumers.
Certified Humane: A third-party certification that ensures animals were raised with a high standard of welfare, including sufficient space, shelter, and gentle handling.
Fair Trade Certified: Most often used for ingredients like chocolate and coffee, but increasingly seen in broader food supply chains, this cert ensures workers receive fair wages and safe conditions.
Ethically Raised Meat: This umbrella term covers humane treatment, sustainable sourcing, and often includes certifications like Certified Humane, Global Animal Partnership (GAP), and USDA Organic.
Farm to Table Meat: Highlights direct relationships with farmers or producers. Buying farm to table meat means greater transparency and traceability.
Lab Grown Meat: Still in early stages, lab-grown meat is produced from animal cells and aims to reduce the environmental impact of traditional livestock. Keep an eye out as this becomes more widely available.
What Is a Butcher’s Blend or Butcher Blend Burger?
A butcher’s blend burger usually combines cuts like brisket, beef chuck, and short rib to create a flavorful, juicy ground beef hamburger option. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for high-impact flavor in hamburgers without stepping into steak territory.

I liked this until everything got a price tag. Now it doesn’t seem as great and I’m not interested in shopping online. Getting a mystery box was often really great.
Hi, Gabrielle. Thank you for reaching out. The goal with our new shopping experience is to give customers more flexibility to get the affordable, high-quality groceries they want with each Misfits delivery. Select customers now have the complete freedom to build their order from among 200+ types of high-quality snacks, beverages, coffee and tea, oils, and other pantry staples, in addition to our signature fresh, organic produce.
With this system, we’re removing the restrictions of the Mischief/Madness base box, as long as you meet the $30 order minimum (which costs less than a Madness sized box). You can now get multiple portions of produce—or even build a box without any fruits and veggies at all. We hope this helps. Please feel free to reach out to our customer support team using our contact form (https://www.misfitsmarket.com/contact-us).
If you have any questions or feedback. Our team would like to know what you think as we are always working to improve our service. Thank you.
It’s just me. Don’t need a lot. So minimum order would b $30 and would b about what size or amount? And order just when I want, not on a schedule?
Great question, Susan! Our customers can choose from among hundreds of grocery items (our signature organic produce among them!) and build your grocery order exactly how you like it, as long as the order reaches the order minimum of $30.For that $30, you can build your box with anything from pantry items (like pasta, canned goods, etc), snacks, drinks, meat and seafood, to any produce you would like. This system allows customers to be flexible, whether shopping for one person or a large family.
To learn more, please visit our FAQs at https://www.misfitsmarket.com/faq or our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/misfitsmarket/community to see photos our customers have shared of their Misfits boxes. We hope you’ll take a moment to check it out and we’d love for you to give us a try anytime.
I also want to know if I have to order weekly? Can I order every other week? I want to give it a try but I don’t want to much where it’s going to waste.
Great question, Melissa! Our free membership is very flexible: we offer the option to skip your order, pause, or build a box whenever you like. Though we do offer weekly and bi-weekly deliveries. Feel free to let us know if you have additional questions, and we hope you will consider joining us sometime soon!
I am trying your service. I live 13 miles to any major town. This will help because I am sure every 2 weeks I will spend minimum, $30 for the two of us. If you do a good job choosing my produce, this can be a great partnership. I will be saving driving time & gas to drive.
We appreciate you giving us a chance, Barbara! Welcome to our Misfits family. ????????
