Introducing Meat, Seafood, and Plant-Based Proteins at Misfits Market

Your one-stop grocery shop just got better

It’s official: high-quality proteins have arrived at Misfits Market! All customers can now choose from a curated assortment of quality meats and seafood from sustainable producers of animal-based proteins raised without antibiotics or hormones.

From free-range non-GMO chicken and 100% grass-fed beef to wild-caught Atlantic cod, we now carry a variety of essential cuts, ground packs, and other items so you can tackle even more of your weekly shopping list. We’re also introducing Impossible™ Burger so our vegan and vegetarian friends can get plant-based proteins delivered alongside their weekly organic produce and pantry staples.

Our growing assortment includes the following items (availability may vary by delivery area):

  • Beef — cuts and ground: 100% grassfed and finished, raised in the U.S. on open pastures without antibiotics or growth hormones
  • Pork — cuts, ground, and bacon: Raised in the U.S. without hormones or antibiotics; Certified Humane®
  • Chicken — cuts and mixed pieces: Raised in the U.S. without preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, or GMOs; Global Animal Partnership Step 3 rating
  • Turkey — ground: Raised in the U.S. without preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, or growth stimulants; Global Animal Partnership Step 5 rating
  • Impossible™ Burger: Manufactured from plant products in the U.S.
  • Salmon fillets and tail pieces: Farm raised without antibiotics, hormones, or GMOs in Norway
  • Atlantic cod fillets: Wild caught in the Barents Sea (off the coast of Norway)
  • Blue hake fillets: Wild caught in New Zealand
  • Steelhead trout fillets: Farm raised without antibiotics, hormones, or GMOs in Norway
  • Mahi-mahi fillets: Wild caught (long line caught on day boats) in Ecuador
  • Yellowtail fillets: Farm raised in Australia without antibiotics with 100% traceability from smolt to table
  • Shrimp: Wild caught in the Gulf of Mexico

As with all the items we carry, the unifying thread among both animal- and plant-based proteins is uncompromising quality. For the most part, they’ll look exactly like what you might find at the grocery store. Plus, these high-quality meats cost roughly 20-40% less than they would in stores, thanks to our direct relationships with suppliers. And because we’re sourcing direct from suppliers, fewer resources are wasted in getting it to you versus a traditional grocery store.

Why we’re expanding our assortment

Affordable, high-quality meats and seafood are something you’ll be seeing more of as we grow, which is why we want to provide transparency behind this expansion. Misfits Market strives to work with farmers and food makers who share our vision for a more sustainable food system—and we’ll continue to do so. That’s not going to change. But, as a mission-driven company committed to giving everyone access to affordable, quality food, we’re making it a priority to give customers more choice. Whether meat has a home on your plate regularly, or just every once in a while, we believe you deserve better options and transparency around how it was raised and where it comes from. Expanding to a fuller assortment that’s inclusive of a variety of dietary preferences and restrictions helps even more people avoid trips to the grocery store and helps support sustainable suppliers of animal-based proteins.

What types of foods we carry and how they’re sourced

We’ve conducted an exhaustive search for producers that meet our high quality standards and are committed to practices like humane treatment, regenerative agriculture, and other methods that cause less harm to the environment.

Occasionally, we may have a few unusual cuts of meats we source for a limited time. Like salmon tails (which take less time to cook than fillets) or differently sized pieces of chicken breast (great for fajitas). It’s the same high-quality meat subject to the same high standards of our other cuts, just in a little different presentation. By opting for this unique offering, you’ll help reduce waste and save even more money in the process.

For those who don’t eat animal proteins, we’re thrilled to launch our first plant-based protein from Impossible™ Foods. Their alternative “ground burger meat” is the perfect base for tacos, bolognese, and so much more. Plus, we’ll have even more plant-based proteins in the future. In the meantime, you can find plenty of protein-rich beans, grains, and other foods in our pantry aisles.

How it works

Simply log into your account during your regular Misfits Market shopping window and build out your Meat & Seafood pack to a $30 minimum. You’ll have the ability to edit your picks after confirming them.

Your $30 pack minimum for Meat & Seafood items counts toward to your overall Misfits Market $30 minimum order. You can even get only meat and seafood in your order, if you’d like, as long as you reach the $30 pack minimum. Learn more here about how our pack minimums allow us to be more efficient and conserve resources.

How your proteins arrive

Each individual item is vacuum packed separately in its own airtight packaging, then frozen before it’s shipped to the Misfits Market distribution center. Individual items are kept frozen at our facilities before being packed in a Coldkeeper, a sustainable thermal liner made with cotton fiber insulation. Ice packs are added to the Coldkeeper to keep items refrigerator-cold in transit.

Items should arrive at least refrigerator cold—below 40 °F as measured with a food thermometer—and may even arrive frozen or partially frozen with ice crystals still visible. They can then be stored in the freezer for later use or in the fridge to thaw to be used sooner. All meat and seafood items are separated from produce and other grocery items in your box; the barrier created by the Coldkeeper bag and its tight seal means there’s no need for another box—or the resources and carbon footprint needed to ship another box.

Thanks for the Great advise on how to store our fresh fruits and veggies!

We’re happy to see you’re enjoying our content and it’s able to help, Elizabeth! 😊

Great question, Lisa! We’re being careful to fine-tune the process as we launch proteins and meats, so we are slowly and carefully ramping up access to protein options right now, and soon all of our customers will be able to shop meat, seafood, and vegan proteins when building their Misfits orders. There is, unfortunately, no way to opt-in at this time, but we intend for all customers to have access to this feature within the coming weeks as we make improvements along the way.

We can’t wait for you to try out our protein options, Kay! We’re truly looking forward to hearing your thoughts 😋🎉

Great question, Mary! Once meat is thawed in the refrigerator, it is safe to refreeze it without cooking, although there may be a loss of quality due to the moisture lost through thawing.

This is wonderful news.. will deffinately check it out. Sounds like a nice addition to your already amazing program. 😍

That is so exciting to hear, Faith! We can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. 😊

I would love to see lamb meat!
I’m not sure meat will be available for me though. How can I know?

We appreciate the feedback and question, Leah! I would be very interested in organic meats, organic tempeh and tofu as well as all organic dairy products. Hope to see them soon! 🙂

As a vegetarian, I want to object to the meat pack $30 minimum being applied before I make any veg choices. I will NEVER eat enough–even with plant-based meat look-alikes– to order anything in the meat aisle. Why have this restriction in the first place?

Thank you for your feedback and concern, Ellie. Establishing Meat & Seafood pack minimums allows us to be more efficient and conserve resources in our delivery process. The more items you order, the fewer cold packs are needed to get them to you, as frozen items keep one another cold inside the top-performing Coldkeeper bags we use to keep items refrigerator-cold in transit. Plus, our low prices make it easy to stock up all at once. If you have any further questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out to our support team. They are there for you and always happy to help.

My thoughts exactly. I don’t have storage space for $30 worth of plant based protein!

I don’t know the pricing yet her, but $30 of Impossible burger from a regular grocery store is only 4 12-oz packages. That’s really not that much.

I definitely like this meat and seafood options can’t wait til my next order

Thanks for your feedback, Lisa! We’d love to hear what you think. 😊💚

This is fantastic! I do wish that there was no minimum order order for the ‘meat’ section. Only two in this household and we do our best to stay vegan. Don’t want to miss my veggies by stocking up on Impossible burgers😉. Do hope it will eventually be a combined order….I do understand you do have to make it worthy to do this

While we are carnivores and like your antibiotic free, no GMO pledge we are not psyched about the distances some of these products are traveling to get here! This is certainly not good for the planet from the carbon foot print point of view. We try to buy local meats as often as possible and would hope you will try to limit your partnerships to far away places.
Deb and Charlie

Thank you for bringing your concerns to us, Deb and Charlie! Minimizing our carbon footprint is something we think a lot about. We rank sustainability right up there with accessibility and affordability as our focuses here at Misfits Market. Each step along the way represents more cost, increased distance/carbon footprint, and time spent sitting after being harvested. Our farmers bring their produce and meat directly to our fulfillment centers to be sorted into boxes and then shipped to your door. This is more similar to a CSA-style arrangement (except you don’t have to drive and pick up the box!). Reducing the number of stops our food makes to just 1 is all part of what we do differently in order to minimize our carbon footprint as much as we can. You can learn more about our sourcing philosophy on our website: https://www.misfitsmarket.com/sourcing. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out to our support team. They are there for you and always happy to help!

I wonder why don’t I get meat and seafood aisle? I have been with misfits for many many months now…

Hi, Maria!

I’m excited to see plant based proteins available, and I would love to see your selections expand. Tofu would be high on my list, as well as sausages and hot dogs and plant based chick’n products. Or anything.I love to try new things!

We’d love to hear your thoughts when it becomes available to you, Susan!! 😊

Can I buy just produce and groceries? Or do I have to start by buying $30 of meat first and THEN can add vegetables, thereby increasing my order to well over $30? And I see that you can edit the meat order; does that mean I can remove some of that $30 of meat once I add veggies?

Great question, Alyssa! There is a box minimum of $30 and a meat & seafood pack minimum of $30. Plus, our low prices make it easy to stock up all at once! However, your $30 pack minimum for Meat & Seafood items will be applied to your overall Misfits Market $30 minimum order. You could even get only meat and seafood in your order, if you’d like, as long as you reach the pack minimum.

Great question, Gail! As a mission-driven company committed to giving everyone access to affordable, high-quality food, we’re making it a priority to give customers more choice. This includes plant-based proteins so our vegan and vegetarian friends can enjoy these items alongside their weekly organic produce and pantry staples. In the near future, we’ll be adding more categories to our offering so our customers can get everything they need from Misfits Market and make trips to the grocery store a thing of the past!

When I signed up, I did so because you offered organic. This is important to me to support companies that only support organic, regenerative proactices. For this reason, we will be canceling our subscription.

We’re sorry to see you go, Gail! Our mission hasn’t changed. We’re still dedicated to providing quality food at a value while breaking the ugly cycle of food waste. Now, our rescue efforts just happen at a larger scale across more categories of products. We’re able to pass on such big savings to our subscribers because we work directly with our partners to tackle inefficiencies in the food system.

Unnecessary food waste is happening everywhere, which is why we need to go where there’s a big opportunity to help. While the food might not always look funny, it’s all responsibly sourced for a reason—whether it was simply excess inventory or a closeout deal we couldn’t pass up. We always want to do everything we can to support the regenerative growing practices of organic farms of every size.

That said, if there’s any more feedback that you’d like to share, please do not hesitate to let our team know by reaching out here: http://www.misfitsmarket.com/contact-us. Thank you for giving us a try, and we hope you may consider joining us again sometime down the line!

We farm and belong to a coop. I take offense at having to buy $30 of meat and fish before I get to fruits and vegetables. You have probably lost a customer when it is my time tobe opted in
To proteins. Would need to spend $60 to get what I want. That is double. Nice bait and switch.

Hi, Linda. We’re very sorry to read this! It is completely optional to add proteins to your order. Establishing meat and seafood pack minimums allows us to be more efficient and conserve resources in our delivery process. If you have any concerns about this, please let our support team know and they’ll be sure to address any questions you may have (https://www.misfitsmarket.com/contact-us). We’d hate to see you go!

How are the wild caught fish caught more specifically (when not specified)? E.g. pole-caught or trawler?

Great question, Lauren! Hofseth fish is owned and vertically integrated from smolt to table, and they also source high-quality fish and seafood from around the world. Here’s the sourcing of our current selection of wild caught fish:
Atlantic Cod: Wild caught in the Barents Sea (off the coast of Norway)
Blue Hake: Wild caught in New Zealand
Mahi-Mahi: Wild caught in Ecuador

To learn more about how they do things, we suggest you head to their website here: https://www.hofseth.no/. We will also have additional information available on each individual product page. If you have any further questions, please feel free to also submit a request using our contact form https://www.misfitsmarket.com/contact-us. Our support team is always happy to help!

Thanks for this feedback, Beverly! We hope you can enjoy some of these protein options soon 😋🙌

I think that many of the people who have responded are under the impression that they cannot order produce unless they also order meat. We can still just order produce and pantry, correct? The meat is just an additional opportunity with a minimum amount required if we choose? Thank you for clarifying.

Thank you for inquiring about this, Shelley. Yes, you can still order only produce and pantry items, if this is your preference. Our scope has just expanded to include more items you would find in a regular grocery store, such as protein options. That said, if you do chose to purchase proteins, your $30 pack minimum for Meat & Seafood items will be applied to your overall Misfits Market $30 minimum order. This means you could even get only meat and seafood in your order, if you’d like, as long as you reach the pack minimum. We hope this helps!

It would be great to see you offer high quality organ meats and bones!!! Excited to try the seafood and beef.

Once you receive the meat, in this case, pork, thawed, how quickly must you use it. There is so use by date on it.

Hi, Mary. Thank you for reaching out to us. Currently, frozen products are not required by the FDA to print an expiration date on their packaging. Most “best by” or “sell by” dates printed on packages are done so voluntarily, and this producer has elected not to do. The USDA estimates that 30 percent of the food supply is lost or wasted at the retail and consumer levels. One source of food waste arises from consumers or retailers throwing away wholesome food because of confusion about the meaning of dates displayed on the label. For more information, please visit the USDA website: Food product dating (https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/food-product-dating).

Please feel free to reach out to our customer support team using our contact form https://www.misfitsmarket.com/contact-us if you have any questions or feedback.

Thank you for this option! Would love to see lamb, bison, tofu, and tempeh among the selections.

Sorry you are offering farm raised seafood in some instances. We only buy wild caught.

Thank you for letting us know, Martha. We do offer some wild caught options, such as the Atlantic cod, Blue hake, and Mahi-mahi fillets. That said, we’ve hand-picked suppliers that have found innovative ways to minimize environmental impact by avoiding industrialized farming while still making high-quality products that are affordable. Hofseth fish is owned and vertically integrated from smolt to table. Their fish are responsibly farm raised in large, deep open water pens with a low pen density ensuring maximum comfort and fed customized feed composed of vegetables, raw marine material, antioxidants, and minerals. We hope you can enjoy some of these seafood options soon!

I am working on a healthier lifestyle.. I became so distraught reading about the glyphosates and praying that your company goes no where near using it.

As far as the Salmon, do you get any from Chile? Please convince me about farm ground salmon as opposed to wild caught.

Thank you

Thank you for inquiring about this, Anita! We’ve hand-picked suppliers, like Hofseth, that make affordable and high-quality products while still finding innovative ways to minimize environmental impact by avoiding industrialized farming. Hofseth fish is owned and vertically integrated from smolt to table. Their fish are responsibly farm raised in large, deep open water pens with a low pen density ensuring maximum comfort and fed customized feed composed of vegetables, raw marine material, antioxidants, and minerals. The salmon in particular is farm raised in Norway. We definitely hope you’ll be able to give it a try very soon!

I store my fruits and veggies in my Tupperware veggie savers. It practically doubles the length of time stored.

I am handicapped, home bond senior who tries to get as much home delivery as possible. I was just looking into Trader Joes and another company where more than just veggies are available, so I was thrilled to see Misfits expanding their options. I really love misfits and would like to get as much from one trusted company as possible. Presently my food comes from MisFits, Amazon, Walmart and local farmers market, but on the last two, I have to send someone else out to get items for me, and haul it in. This costs me about 20.00 dollars and on a fixed soc. security income, this can add up. The more you can offer, the more items I will buy. Maybe one day, I will just be able to order from Misfits only. I am holding off signing up with the other two companies until I give Misfits a try, but wondering how long it might be before I can shop your expanded options. Thanks, Donna

Hi, Donna! We appreciate your feedback and being such a valued member of our community.

I am excited about being able to purchase meats and seafood .. Please keep me posted !
Thanks ……

So we just got our first round of meat options and I was pretty impressed! We’ve even changed our delivery to weekly because of the continued increase in variety for my fam. Keep up the good work misfits.

Yay! Thank you for sharing this great feedback, Samantha. We’re so happy to hear you’re loving your first protein order and our growing assortment of delicious food. We truly appreciate your support, and we hope the entire family has fun enjoying all of the new goodies 💛😋🙌
