What’s In Your Box? January Edition

Heat up the new year—jalapeño and serrano peppers, anyone?—with a new mix of rescued organic produce. We’ll start to see fewer hardy squashes this month, but a lot more root veggies. Beets, onions, turnips, carrots. The perfect mix for meal planning as the base of one-pan dinners.

Check out what we’re rescuing this month:

Please explain the selection process. I am confused about how one goes about ordering.
If I would like to have all fruits is this possible? How do I determine box size?

Hi Teddy, thanks for your question! We edited your comment to remove personal information as this is a public comments section.

Once you sign up for Misfits Market and select a day that you’d like to receive your box, you will be given a 3-day window where you can choose from a selection of produce to add to your box. This produce selection is limited to what we’re able to rescue, so the produce will vary from week to week. You will receive an email from us when your customization window is open with a link to direct you to the website where you can pick and choose what goes in your box. You can also log into your account and visit your account page, which will have a large countdown clock to let you know when you can customize your box.

If you’re having issues accessing any of these pages or still have questions, please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Thank you!

I was suppose to be on here today at 4:00 how do I find my order and how do I choose what is in my box

Hi Norma, great question! When your weekly customization 3-day window opens, you should receive an email from Misfits Market with a link that will take you directly to that page. Please check your spam to make sure emails from us are not going there. Additionally, you can log into your account and visit your account page. Click “Upcoming Box” and if your window is open, you can start building your box right there! Or, it will show a countdown clock as to when you can customize your box. Thank you!

Hello. I am very interested in signing up for Misfitsmarket. However, I am so confused as to how it works and how to proceed. Can anyone please contact me to explain how I sign up and order products.
Thank you

Hi Terri, we’re so excited that you’re interested in using Misfits Market! Sign up on our website (https://www.misfitsmarket.com/) and choose your box size. We have a small and a larger size with a wider variety of fruits and veggies. Each week, you’ll receive an email from us that it’s time for you to build your box. Select the produce you’d like from a list of rescued produce, then add everything else you’ll need for the week: cooking staples, dry goods, and specialty produce. Skip that extra trip to the store.

If you’re still confused wit the process, we’re here to help! Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Thank you!

Hi June, great question! To see when your first box will arrive, log into your account and visit your account page. This page will tell you exactly when your box is planned to be packed and shipped. Boxes should arrive 1-2 days later. We will also email you with shipping information and a tracking link, so keep an eye out on your email for those details. Thank you!

I have a question. I’m located in Ohio …. I was wondering where the items would be shipped from ? Planning on ordering my first box soon . Thanks 🙂

Feedback about Customization:
Remove the minimum selection for each category, if possible. I don’t often log in early enough to make my selection and often left with items that I really don’t want, and unable to meet the min. selection for that category. I don’t mind receiving less variety of items, but really don’t want to pick items that I won’t use.

agreed. This issue is one of the reasons I am skipping boxes. I do log on right at the time things open up and STILL can’t get things I will use.

I agree. Sometimes I would like to choose only a couple of items that really need, and don’t mind to get random stuff for the rest of the box.

Same! Or I would rather have a double amount of something. I would have had to pick 3-4 different types of potatoes this past week when I would have rather have 1-2 varieties.

We received a GREAT produce box this morning!! We are VERY pleased with the products we received! Might even have 2 referrals signing up for next time!

Still waiting for my box that should have been here the 24th. Don’t count your chickens.

January 6

Hi Trisha, we’re sorry to hear about the delay in your package! We’d like to look into this to make it right. Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Thank you!

I’m on a bi-weekly plan and have enjoyed trying the new things on offer. It keeps me cooking and trying new recipes while rescuing food from the compost heap or the dumpster! What I’d really like to see is — maybe on a quarterly basis — we could receive a return shipping lable for our clean, dry icepacks and packing materials. Blue Apron does this and it really made a difference to me.
Plastic bags on the ice packs aren’t always readily recyclable and even the paper filled insulation has to go in the trash. The filling can’t go in recyclable bin. Also, I’ve tried to research the contents of the icepacks and although they say non-toxic, they also say don’t consume it or pour it down the drain. (?) So, can it really be ok to pour it on the ground? Why can’t it JUST BE WATER? Or, why not reuse them? Is it at all cost effective to fill a return box for Misfits to pay shipping? That’s the Blue Apron policy and it certainly made me feel alot better about it while I was using them.

I would love to be able to return ice packs for re-use! In this small town there aren’t many options for recycling so if it isn’t paper or plastic it will be going to the landfill.

This is a great idea. I agree that we should reduce and reuse packaging material if at all possible. I will expectantly wait to hear a response.

And you would think we could get a small credit toward our account for returning the packaging. I understand it might be touchy with the pandemic and having to resanitize each pack, but I would also feel better about less waste.

Cut the ginger in 1″ (useful size) pieces, bag it & freeze. It peels easily once frozen & keeps a long time.

You send a great variety of produce, however sending us one baby bok choy, does not a dinner make.

Agree!! I had to keep my small butternut squashes for three deliveries because that just isn’t enough for soup.

Same happened to me once! It ended up being a snack for my 3 yr old. ???? I emailed misfits and they were responsive. They said sometimes these things happen as a small company but they try their best to satisfy us.

I received my first box today. Very fun way to try new produce that I wouldn’t normally try. I agree with the comment about being able to return some of the packing material. Seems such a waste to just throw it away! Where I am, there is really no recycling centers, other than Walmart’s plastic bin. Also, how can we know if we are going to receive just one of an item? I got 1 apple, 1 red beet, 1 cucumber, etc. Not exactly what I was expecting on the quantity side of things. Nice to eat an apple, but can’t really cook up 1 beet for a side dish.

Totally agree with these’too small quantity’ emails- 3 carrots, a zucchini the size of a dill pickle, etc. is just a tease. Would like amounts big enough for 1 recipe and in some cases one meal serving size even for 1 person!

You have to get in psynch with your shippers. I am really angry about having to cancel appointments to wait five 5 days with no communication that was acceptable. I am extremely inconvenienced, annoyed and without vegetables and fruit ON TOP of my first order from the Pantry.
Very poor way to run a felivery company with precious perishables.

This is also my dilemna – By the time I remember to log in, not much left. I would rather double up on what I do want than end up ordering stuff I don’t want. Currently when that happens, I skip that week.

Just started and LOVE the variety that is offered. I started with a big box, then a smaller box since this is a small household.

A nice adventure. Even got a referral this early on.

I was unable to find the way to choose items last week. I was very frustrated. I chose my box and had to pay but could not choose anything.

Hi Vicki, we’re sorry to hear that you had issues accessing your account to customize your box! You should receive an email from Misfits Market when your 3-day window opens. You can also check your account page, which has a large countdown clock to let you know when you can customize your box. If you are still having issues with your next box, we’d like to look into this. Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Thank you!

I’m having the same issues with receiving proper notice. I’m getting ready to cancel.

Linda Ross

Very happy with my so far 3 boxes, I have my alarm set for the time when we are allowed to pick and chose, and been able to get good stuff. Good job guys!! Keep coming the good boxes with yummy veggies and fruits.

I am trying to decide whether to continue. I don’t like to cook, I live alone, too, so even biweekly is too much. Plus, I often don’t see enough things I want when I have to choose 6 items, or even 4. I have been sharing my box with a friend who cooks more and has a partner, or postponing/cancelling/donating mine and sharing his, If I quit, I will no longer see what is available, which will make it harder to help him choose what I would like. I sometimes would buy from the marketplace, but I’m not allowed to do that unless I buy a box.

The Misfits Market concept is not well designed for my needs!

I also agree, our house is fully run over with atleast 10 flattened packing boxes as well as 2 hugh garbage bags of packing materials.. the boxes are so sturdy they’re a shame to waste please advise? Also. A Gree one baby boy choy doest not a meal make 2 to 3 atleast. Thank you.s

I loved my box. The small bok choy I added to rice noodles and pulled pork. If you dont have a lot of something then use it in soup or fried rice. Tomorrow I am making spaghetti squash with zucchini and carrots in spaghetti sauce. A pot roast cooked in wine will have pears added at he end along with quick cooked nappa cabbage. Just adapt to what you have.

My daughter dehydrated her ginger this time, then whizzed it into powder …. one way to preserve it!

I don’t even bother to peel my Ginger I just chop it into 1-inch pieces put in my food processor hack into a reusable jar once it’s in the jar I top it off with white vinegar and it lasts forever

Great product. I really wish you give us a bigger window of time to make pur selection.

Please allow doubles of the choices. Also delicata squash was barely enough for one person. Otherwise everything is fresh and packed so well. Thank you.

Hi Elaine, we love this idea and are currently working on options for customers to select more than one quantity of each produce. We’ll share updates in our newsletter and social accounts once this change has been implemented. Thanks for your support and we are excited to share our new changes soon!

Absolutely loved my produce box this month. We received 3 large beets enough for dinner and a bit for lunch tomorrow. The greens arrived in great shape. The variety this month was wonderful and I sure enjoy crispy radishes. The zucchini were a bit beat up but one will never know when I make zucchini frittata tomorrow! THANK YOU for creating this win-win scenario!

I’d personally like it if we had the option to do like a weekly staples box. I currently get the madness ( i think thats what it called, its the larger box) delivered bi-weekly. I tend to add a bit of of the add ons , but it would be nice if you had an option to get a box of just add on items that can be ordered between the produce box shipments.

Hi Kat, great suggestion! We’re constantly optimizing how we offer our selections and we are currently working on new ways to build your box. Keep an eye on our newsletters and social channels for updates regarding these new changes. Thank you!

Yes, please find a way for us to send you the boxes and packing materials back! This is my only concern to date.

I just received my Misfits order and for the first time I had 2 moldy zucchini. ???? And the yellow squash was bad also!

Hi Gwynne, we’re so sorry to hear about the quality of your produce! That’s definitely not up to our standards and we want to make this right. Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Thank you!

I enjoy the produce we receive and most often it is in great condition I like the options but end up choosing things I’d rather not have due to limitations on what I can order.

I also worry about getting food I don’t like- like Granny Smith apples, cilantro and jalapeños. I barely like kale. I live alone and have so much food. I cook the vegetables ahead of time. I haven’t seen a way to communicate what I don’t want.

I agreed with Dolly , the ice bag and insulated paddings are a waste . They would not accept for recycle . I would be happy to get them back to you so it can be recycle and use it again for your next customer. I don’t throw them out but am running out of room to store them in my garage.

I love the ability to customize my box! I do plan meals around what I order and love everything!!! Particularly the fruit, the avocados, the lettuce and the blueberries and nuts!!! I could go on!! I have been ordering for six months and it gets better as I learn how to harness the goodness!! Thank you Misfits!!!

I am still not sure if my subscription went through or not
If it did I should be receiving a box this Saturday
January 9 .
I have submitted 2 help forms but I have yet to hear
From anyone. I am so confused. This is definitely no
a good first impression.

Hi Marie, we’re sorry for our lack of communication! If you log into your account, visit your account page and click “Upcoming Box.” This will show you the status of your next box and should tell you if your selections have gone through or not. Additionally, you will receive an email from Misfits Market when your box has been packed and shipped. If you haven’t received any email communication from us, please check your spam to make sure it has not gone there. Rest assured that if you’ve submitted a ticket with our customer success team that it’s in our queue and we will reply as soon as we can. Thank you!

Having read the recent comments I too have several suggestions.
.
1. One baby bok choy is not nearly enough for even one person.

2 I too would love to be able to recycle the ice packs. I can use one or two but I am on a weekly delivery and can’t keep all of them.

3. I used the insulation to cushion mailed Christmas presents this year but definitely won’t need 12 next Christmas.

4. I love the pears but mine come very bruised. If I don’t use them within a day or two they rot. Is there any way to cushion them better?

5. I would love to be able to order more than one on things like the bok choy or carrots and onions.

6 . I love the idea of misfit markets and love getting my boxes each week. I am offering my suggestions to make it even berrer if possible

Hi Joyce, we’re sorry to see you go! If you’d like to pause or cancel your subscription, please log in and visit your account page here: https://www.misfitsmarket.com/account Then, click “Manage Subscription.” On the right side of the page, you’ll be able to change your subscription preferences—preferred day, frequency, and box size. Or, scroll down to “need a break?” to skip, pause, or cancel. Thank you!

Hi Barb, great question! We do not currently accept EBT but this is something we’re working toward very soon. Be sure to follow our social accounts for updates on when we will accept EBT. Thank you!

Always love my box! Keep em coming. Love using new veggies and the add ones are on point! I’m a covid nurse and this has saved me from going to the grocery store

I new and feel like I’ve gone to pick my produce almost immediately as soon as the notification email goes out alerting we can choose, but most the veggies I want are already gone. Should I be logging in before the email alert comes out? Seems too much is gone, too fast otherwise.

Hi Eric, thank you for your message and we hear you loud and clear! The amount of produce we offer each week varies due the nature of rescuing produce, and we’re constantly optimizing how the selection process works so everyone has ample produce to choose from. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to work toward having more produce available throughout your entire customization window, as well as increase the selection. Thank you!

Several times I have not been able to customize my box. I can’t find the link that allows me to do this

Hi Wendy, happy to help! When your weekly customization window opens, you should receive an email from Misfits Market with a link that will take you directly to that page. Please check your spam to make sure emails from us are not going there. Additionally, you can log into your account and visit your account page. If your window is open, you can start building your box right there! Or, it will show a countdown clock as to when you can customize your box.

i would like to order more of something i like then to have to order something i do not like and end up throwing it away

Hi Annette, thank you for your message and we totally agree. We’re constantly optimizing how the selection process works and this is one suggestion that we’ve heard a lot, so we’re currently working on some new shopping options, including being able to add multiple items of a single piece of produce. Be sure to follow our social accounts and our newsletter for updates when that will be available. Thanks!

I’d like to be able to select 2 of some items, instead of just one of each, and have to select items I don’t really want. For example, I’d rather have 2 bunches of radishes or celery, than one each and have to choose two other items I don’t really want, just to fill a quota

Hi Deb, thank you for your message and we think that’s a great suggestion! We’re constantly optimizing how the selection process works and this is one suggestion that we’ve heard a lot, so we’re currently working on some new shopping options, including being able to add multiple items of a single piece of produce. Be sure to follow our social accounts and our newsletter for updates when that will be available. Thanks!

Wondering if people really find this is a money saver? I am somewhat happy with the service but my last box had more ginger root than I can use in 2-3 months. So it’s a waste. And my last two orders have had damaged or on-the-verge-of-going-bad produce.

Hi Ondine, we’re sorry to hear about the quality of your last box. That’s definitely not up to our standards and we want to make it right. Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Thank you!

I received my order yesterday and I paid for the red quinoa and it was not in my box . What do I need to do to get a refund for it ?

Hi Kelly, we’re sorry to hear that you didn’t receive the quinoa you ordered! We will refund you for this missing purchase. Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Thank you!

I mostly enjoyed my first produce box but I agree with a previous comment made – the quantity of certain items left me scratchy my head. What does a family of 4 do with 2 tiny turnips?

I find the portions too small generally for more than 1 or 2 side servings for a meat-centric dish, but I like to combine a variety of root vegetables to make a nice soup. The problem is, I can’t always get the kind, or quantity of root veggies I like to satisfy me because I am forced to choose 2 or 3 items from a field of 4 or 6 when I want more, or 6 items of from a field of 10 that I only want 2 or 3 of. Ad MANY times the items seen in the ‘what we have this week’ email are not even among my chooses at all! Where are the delicata squash and cauliflower or romanescu my mouth is watering for?-

Hi Diane, thank you for your comment and we totally understand the frustration. We’re constantly optimizing how the selection process works and are working to incorporate the option to select multiples of individual produce. Please follow our social channels and continue reading our newsletter for updates on that. Thank you!

I have been receiving orders since last year. I agree about the selection limits as someone else had commented and about the ice packs. During the pandemic I have received many food boxes and most everything was great and when there was an issue I contacted MisFits and they fixed the problem. I have tried many other food delivery services and this one is my favorite!

Hi Virginia, we totally agree. We’re constantly optimizing how the selection process works and this is one suggestion that we’ve heard a lot, so we’re currently working on some new shopping options, including being able to add multiple items of a single piece of produce. Be sure to follow our social accounts and our newsletter for updates when that will be available. Thanks!

Loved this first box. Agree, this is a lot of ginger. Made quinoa with bok choy. Delish!

I agree with the comments posted previously regarding:
the elimination of the category minimums
allowing doubling of selections
return of packing materials, especially the cold packs

I started misfits just about a month ago .
I can’t say enough good things about what I have ordered weekly. I’m not disappointed with any of it .
I am a very broad cook, I cook a lot of plant based vegan dishes:)
I go through a lot of produce & fruits .
This is a great program .
Some things that I get an abundance like the ginger it is easily frozen – so I freeze it.
I don’t mind getting up too much of something;)

We are a small family of two whose family income was severely disrupted last year due to COVID. I am getting ready to select my Mischief food box for the third time since signing up in December. As we still must abide, shop and work within COVID limitations this alternative is a convenience that works for us. Just trying to get into eating fresh instead of relying on restaurant delivery. We choose our food according to our next week’s recipes. But treat ourselves to one new food for a taste and cooking experience. Like fresh ginger (tasty in chicken sauces and grated in herbal tea) Misfits affordable food service is awesome! This service has allowed us to purchase some food items that literally was neglected for years like oranges and grapefruits.

My last two orders I received moldy food items. I’ve had to cut away the mold to use it. I agree with the challenge to fill my box with items my family will eat. Often not able to order desired items because they are no longer available. Some items I select do not make it in the order and are replaced with items my family won’t eat. We tried the “new” replacement item and it was not a welcome change. Due to the moldy items and the lack of choices, and replacement with items my family won’t eat, we are opting to discontinue with this service. We love the concept and stand behind the work being done, just not meeting my family’s needs at this time.
I also agree with the return envelope/box for packing materials such as ice packs. Great idea!

Do you usually pick what is in your box or do you just take what is sent? This will be my first time and want to get it right.\

Hi Karen, great question! You can customize what goes into your box with your first delivery. When your weekly customization 3-day window opens, you should receive an email from Misfits Market with a link that will take you directly to that page. Please check your spam to make sure emails from us are not going there. Additionally, you can log into your account and visit your account page. This is the second shipment in a row that my produce has been spoiled and I’ve had to throw over half away. Not a happy customer anymore. Thinking on canceling.

Hi Kelly, we’re so sorry to hear about the quality of your latest box. That’s definitely not up to our standards and we want to make this right. Not thrilled with 2nd box..threw out the wrinkled soft turnips, rotten apples and zuchiini, sad jalapeño peppers.. good news lemons oranges mangoes acorn squash, cabbage , green onions okay…so half of the produce was okay…not worth the $42 price tag…so disappointed with this box

Hi Carol, we’re sorry to hear about the quality of your latest box. That’s definitely not up to our standards and we want to make this right. I just ordered my first box and don’t know why some items disappeared when the final shipping list cam out? For instance, white sweet potato fingerlings… Weird or typically happens this way?

Hi Karen, great question! Occasionally we will have to make a substitute depending on the quality of produce that we receive, but you should only receive the items that you have selected for your box. If you’ve received a substitute that is far unlike what you ordered, we want to make this right! Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. Hi Misfits!
I am one of the admins in the Facebook group ‘Misfits Market Meal Ideas.’ May I share the only image of what you’re rescuing this month in our group? I’ll go share the link today and try to get the correct imagine attached

Thank you!.

My daughter just loves your services so , as a lover of fresh veggies,I decided to try it.I have only had one delivery so far .It was okay.I do not want to pay for things that I don’t order and cannot use.I trcd oranges,,can’t eat oranges, sis order grapefruit for a friend but not oranges.
Also, when I was given a list of what was available to order none of the things I really wanted were available. Is this SOP?
I’ll give it another try.Hope I’m not disappointed aga8n

I joined right at the start of Covid. I am elderly high risk and avoiding stores only going for curbside no contact. I can’t say enough about Misfits! I have never eaten healthier or organic before as now since I subscribed! I have PMR Arthritis I see a Rheumatologist ,my inflammation has been getting worse and worse last year. I was shocked seeing at my last Dr. visit that my inflammation level dropped from sky high to a low normal number! I believe that the healthy Misfits Organics are responsible for the improvement in my health. I have tried new recipes such as Apple Kale salad with olive oil vinegar dressing using the Tuscan Kale, Apple, and onions from Misfits. The wife and I enjoy our healthy yummy Misfits always! Thanks!

Just received my first Misfits box and have to say I am disappointed. Looking at the site I see pictures of beautiful bounty boxes with a solid amount to” feed 1-2 people for a week” which is what the site speaks of in regards to vegetable amounts. There’s simply no way and bordering on false advertising on so many levels. First my Monday delivery came today (Tuesday) which was less than ideal due to prepared shopping, but that’s a minor annoyance. The more pressing disappointment comes from not receiving things I ordered and the amount/size that I did receive. I was realistic with the shapes and sizes I would receive, but optimistic about the quantity when it came to small sizes – which proved to be wrong. One squash the length of my palm, one grapefruit smaller than the oranges in my house, and one eggplant smaller than my hand. Not quote sure what boxes the people on the website ordered but in doing the math at my local Wegmans, this “bounty” would have cost NO MORE than $13.00 not the $22 paid.

Disappointing to say the least.

Hi Liz, we’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed in the size of your box. That’s definitely not up to our standards and we’d like to look into this for you. Please fill out a ticket with our customer success team here: https://help.misfitsmarket.com/contact/custom-contact-form-S1NAIK1Iw Your message will be added to our queue and our team will be in touch with you via email as soon as they can. I have a suggestion and possible solution for recycling issues that would reduce packaging costs and address the problem of recycling boxes and packing materials. Why not look into using sturdier reusable boxes that when emptied by a customer, can be picked up and returned at the time of delivery of the upcoming box ? That way theoretically you’ll never need more than two boxes per customer. The reusable packing materials could be placed in the empty box/container being shipped back and left at the front door or location where the upcoming box is always delivered.

I agree with the others that to solve the problem of having to order items that aren’t needed or wanted to meet “minimum selection” requirements, being able to double up on fewer items would be a very good idea. I’ve also experienced quality issues recently having received mealy unripe tomatoes and beat up zucchinis and mushy cucumbers but for me the advantages of the service outweigh the disadvantages. As someone who eats mostly raw fruit and raw vegetables, I’d love to be able to get more of those and fewer of the root vegetables that need to be cooked.

I received my first Madness size box yesterday. I was beyond disappointed. First my order of rainbow carrots were six very small (size of my index finger) and they were also dried out. Second I had asked for the Bartlett Pears, there were NONE but I received so many Gala Apples. More veggies would have been nice. I am including a list of what I did get. I am giving this one more chance and if it is still disappointing I am done. You have to set your clock and hoover to get just some of the items. I feel sorry for those that wait until the next day after the picks are available. Is it better to make no picks and just spin the wheel!?

Your Madness box
Gala Apples – 8
Bartlett Pears – NONE (why not sub for something besides MORE APPLES?)
Rainbow Carrots, Loose – 6 small shriveled
Cucumber – 2 med
Red Kale – 2 bunches

Red Beets, Loose – 2 med
