Pistachio Puppy Chow (Our Favorite Upgrade to the Classic Muddy Buddies Recipe)

If you grew up eating puppy chow (or muddy buddies, depending on where you’re from), you know there’s nothing better than crispy cereal coated in warm chocolate and a blizzard of powdered sugar. But recently, we saw someone on Threads swap the usual peanut butter for pistachio butter, and our entire team basically stopped mid-scroll.

At Misfits Market, we’ve been obsessed with Pistakio’s small-batch pistachio butter since the day we launched it — so we grabbed a jar, headed into the studio, and tested the idea immediately.

And the verdict?

Pistachio Puppy Chow is elite.

It’s rich, nutty, lightly salty, and the pistachio flavor pairs ridiculously well with chocolate. If you’re already a pistachio person, this will be your new signature snack.

Instructions

  1. Melt the chocolate mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, add chocolate chips, pistachio butter, unsalted butter, salt, and vanilla. Microwave in 30-second increments, stirring often, until smooth and fully melted.
  2. Coat the cereal: Add the 6 cups of rice cereal to a large bowl. Drizzle the warm pistachio-chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently fold until evenly coated. (Be careful not to crush the cereal!)
  3. Add the powdered sugar: Sift 1 to 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar over the mixture and toss to coat. Or transfer everything to a large zip-top bag and shake gently until every piece is covered.
  4. Cool + crisp: Spread the coated cereal onto a sheet tray and let rest for 10–20 minutes, until the coating has fully dried.
  5. Devour: Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for 3–4 days. (If it lasts that long.)

Why Pistachio Works So Well

Pistachio has a naturally sweet, buttery flavor that pairs beautifully with chocolate. Pistakio’s pistachio butter is ultra-smooth and made from sustainably sourced California pistachios, which gives this recipe a richer, more complex flavor than traditional peanut butter versions.

Serving Ideas

  • Sprinkle freeze-dried strawberries
  • Add chopped dark chocolate
  • Toss with mini marshmallows
  • Mix with pretzels for salty-sweet clusters
