Smoky Lime Cardamom Cocktail

Cardamom Syrup:

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup raw sugar
  • 8 cardamom pods, crushed


  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 ounce cardamom syrup
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1 lime peel
  • Seltzer water
  • Ice


  1. For the syrup, combine the cardamom pods, water, and sugar in a small saucepan. Simmer until the sugar has dissolved. Let syrup cool in a saucepan, then transfer to an airtight container. (Syrup can be stored in the fridge for a few months.)
  2. For the cocktail, place 2 cardamom pods on a heat proof surface. With a match or lighter, light the cardamom pods on fire and place an 8 ounce glass overtop. Leave covered for 2 to 3 minutes until the glass appears to be full of smoke.
  3. Flip your glass and then fill it with ice. Add in cardamom syrup, lime juice, vanilla extract, and gin. Give it a stir then top it with seltzer water. Garnish with the charred cardamom pods and the lime peel.
