What’s In Your Box? October Edition

September is one of those weird “in-between seasons” months whereas October is 100% fall. This month, you’ll begin to see even more hardy squashes and the tail end of hot weather fruits like plums. Summer sweets seem to get the most love. But we’re here to make a case for fall fruit being highly underrated. Spoiler: We won’t even get into apples! Because this month it’s all about persimmons, pomegranates, and pears.

Today was the delivery of my first box. I was very curious, so I made a list of what I got in my box, and went to my grocery store and priced it all out…wow… it would have cost me 43.75 it I bought it at the store….25.00 for my Misfit Market!!!! I am hooked !!

My last box was a mess. I wrote to them and never got a reply. I figured I would give them one more try and today’s box was perfect. So here’s hoping for getting more like this one!

This is one reason I have not signed up yet. A friend told me about this back in March. There are several , maybe wore I do not like and since I cannot choose what I want I have not signed up. I was just thinking about it until I read a few reviews 🙁

I have never received my 1st box and have emailed several time and still gotten no reply, my card has already been charged but still no box, when I track it it says there is a failure of

I had the same experience. My last box was a disaster. It was missing 5 things from my order; they just put lots of potatoes (which I did not ask for in the preorder). Also, I paid (extra) for avocados, and they were not in the box, but I was charged for them. I sent an emails 3 days ago and still I have not received a response. Bad experience (and this was only the third box). I am ready to stop this service.

While I have had some issues with missing Marketplace items, customer service has always been outstanding in correcting shipping mistakes. When the box comes damaged, I put the blame on the carrier. I love getting my Misfits Market box. I have family and close friends who are subscribers; even my 88 year-old mother.

Diddo here! My last box was the same! Should be getting my second box tomorrow! Crossing my fingers! Customer service is nit that! Hard to get any response! Hoping it gets better!

same happened to me I did not notify them, was just hoping it was a fluke. Second box was awesome, lots of stuff. Then I ordered extra items, and didn’t get them all. I wrote to them and did not get a response, or refund for missing item. Next two boxes were just ok. I just keep hoping they will get better.

Why do I have to choose a certain amount of things in each category? Most of the stuff was sold out.

Hi Maryellen, we know how disappointing it is when you try to customize your box and many things are sold out. Due to the nature of our rescue business, we have a limited number of each piece of produce for our customized boxes. We still need to give ever rescued fruit and veggie a home, after all! We suggest checking your account page to learn what day your Marketplace and customization window opens. Then, check your account page at 4pm EST, which is when it first opens. This is very true. Took me a while to figure this out. Now I’m always online at 4 PM on my “shopping day”

When I try choose what’s in my box, it just takes me another loop, never where I can actually choose.

I agree Caroline. That happened to me too. My first box and I don’t know what a couple things are or how to prepare them.

I had my box all done but thought I’d check to see if there was anything new. The only way to do that is to empty your box and start over. Doing it that way was a problem because I lost the Bella mushrooms I had in the original box(just last night). No way to get my original box back apparently?

I would like to see more vegan items like vegan cookies and crackers. Lately Im choosing 6 things I already have because things are out the first day I can customize. Id love a kabocha squash but have never had a chance at one. Im ending up getting more onions and apples cuz thats all there is and then those things pop up in the pay extra marketplace area. Comments?

And we know how frustrating it can be to customize your box only to see that the items you want are sold out! We suggest checking out your account page right at 4 p.m. when customization and The Marketplace opens. Due to the nature of our rescue business, we only have a limited number of each item available, so it’s best to try to add them to your box ASAP. Additionally, we save a number of base items like squashes for mystery boxes, so you could always try getting a mystery box occasionally. We’ll pass this feedback onto our team. Thank you!

received my first box today. it was pretty bent up with a hole torn in the bottom corner. the fedex driver said he got it that way. didn’t seem very full and was missing a couple things i had picked (pears). disappointed in the amount and the items had obviously bounced around with each other cuz the carrots were broken. no biggie just messy. i already did a contact with the company; if this is typical i’ll keep going to the store and pick my own. not a $22 box full.

I got my first box last week. I paid extra to get one package of strawberry. Very disappointing that most of the strawberries inside were rotten, only a few of them were edible. The curly kale was very stiff, didn’t look fresh.

Love getting my boxes however every time I order cucumber I get one that is smashed.

So, if I don’t choose what goes in my box, will that mean I just get the left-overs? I like a surprise, but now that you have opened up allowing everyone to pick, I worry that I’ll get the bottom of the barrel!

I have been receiving boxes for a few months now and my family and I love it. I have only had one issue, that was with UPS damaging and throwing the box in the garbage. After I notified Misfits Market, they gave me a refund for that box. We are learning to like new things and trying out new recipes.

Have received 2 boxes so far. First one I loved the variety and excitement to see what I would get. Second box I customized and I really think I will just allow the random selection of products. It forces me to experiment and research foods I would not normally buy. Pleased as punch and loving what you are doing!

Overall I have greatly enjoyed my boxes! I’ve gotten to try new things and I don’t even have to go to the grocery store to do it! It’s definitely a time and money saver as well!

Got my first box today. The ice pack was completely melted. The cardboard box was soaked so it was messy getting everything out of the box. The kale is yellow, the apples are soft inside not crisp and sweet, the rest of the stuff is just OK. I signed up for Monday delivery and got it Tuesday at 3:30pm. Veggies and fruits on a truck for 5 days not ideal. I live in Florida too so the heat and humidity is brutal. I’ll probably cancel, it’s a nice idea but I can go to my local market and get the same thing fresh. Great idea, if you don’t live in Florida I guess…..

I’ve had problems with my last two boxes. I emailed Oct 1st but never heard back. I’ve now missed my first customize your box period because I was too early on the 1st. (Seeing people’s comments about a lot of things being sold out makes me think I’m getting the leftovers for sure.) Fingers are crossed this box is better than the last one where I had to throw away at least 1/3 of what came to me , and the first box was destroyed and there was something goopy all over my fruits and veggies. I really want to like this!

As for customization, if you don’t customize your box, you definitely aren’t getting the leftovers! There are a lot of reasons why produce may not show up in perfect condition, and we do our best to make it right with customers, but rest assured that when we pick mystery boxes and customized boxes that we are only including high quality produce.

Wish they would take more care packing the boxes. The heavy ice packs are put directly on top of the softest produce in the box (lettuce, frisee, kale), smashing them flat, knocking the leaves off and shortening the lifespan to just 1 or 2 days. The direct moisture of the packs on leafy greens also ruins them by waterlogging them. Leafy greens should be placed on the sides, away from wet, heavy weight, please.

I was thrilled with my first misfit box… nothing looked like a misfit! Everything fresh and so delish! I do have a problem with logging in. My computer just goes white-blank. This is my first box. I was a little nervous but everything was good. I received exactly what I ordered. A couple of bruises but not any different than the store baggers do to my items. I made beef stew and it was amazing. Tried it with the fingerling sweet potatoes for a very nice flavor. Thank you. Looking forward to the next box.

I will receive my first box today. When I ordered most things were not available so I am not going to be getting much of a variety. If I don’t customize will I get a better variety? Is there a way not to customize? Thanks in advance

I was very disappointed in my last box. I don’t care if the produce isn’t pretty but if it’s over ripe or inedible I’m not interested in your product. I emailed you a week ago and never heard back so I cancelled my upcoming box. I’m not sure I want to continue with Misfits even if it is less expensive. What good is it if I can’t eat it!

This is my third box. The first one was a disappointment mostly because instead of delivering on Tuesday as requested, it came on Thursday and a lot of the veggies that should have been kept cold weren’t. I had to throw half of the box out. Second box was great. This box – mixed feelings. I asked for yellow squash, which I got – one tiny yellow squash. What can I do with one 5″ squash? Not too much. I expected something larger, or if they are that small, more than one. I ordered limes, and got 7 of them. Just wondering if maybe more thought could be given to the quantities?

Thanks for the reply, I wasn’t expecting any reparations, I just wanted to bring the issue to your attention. Getting something that you can’t use by itself actually makes you spend more money to get a few more to be able to create a dish, or even worse, discard that item – which is what you’re trying to avoid in the first place. I appreciate you using this as an opportunity to provide better service.

Received my box on Saturday and was excited to see all the wonderful fruit and veggies. Was going to make peach cobbler last night and my peaches were spoiled. So disappointed. Can you replace them in my next box ?

You’re telling everyone to login to customize their box at 4:00 on the day their market opens! That’s why it is always jammed up then and so when you finally do get on, surprise , all the good stuff is sold out again! Solution?

I’ve written several times about the poor conditions that I’ve received my boxes and have never once received a response. I’ve had two boxes with crushed tomatoes all over and rotten veggies that I had to throw away. I’ve put my subscription hold, hoping that after a break things will get better.

Where on my account page can i find what day my Marketplace and customization window opens?

My first box was in great shape and looked amazing! But I’ve skipped my last box because the last few boxes just look horrible and my tomato’s where rotten my lettuce was slimy and grapes where mushy! I love the idea of these boxes my son eats fruits and veggies like they are going out of style but if they come in bad then we can not eat them and it becomes a waste.

I just got a notification that my box will ship on this week. I never got an email link to choose my items!

Please cancell all future boxes to my account. The box was a disaster. The kale was yellow.
The zuchinni were both cracked in half. One of the 3 apples was all brused.
I really don’t want to take a chance on any other boxes.

It sounds like you are having a lot of problems with the boxes. I was just going to join. I especially like that good food does not go to waste. This helps the farmers/growers.

Some weeks, I just can’t find enough choices in a customize category. I will always eat fruit… Any fruit! Is there a reason that I cannot double up my choice of fruit? This week I received Bartlett Pears. They are delicious but there were only 3. Next week when I order, I’d much prefer an additional order of 3 pears instead of one of the other choices I know I’ll find in the options. Is there a way to do this and if not, will you give customers the chance to double a request for an item at some point in the future?

My first box was never delivered, as the fedex report said damaged goods. I was wondering if I was still charged for this? Very hesitant to receive my next box, but it arrived on time and I was very pleased with the bounty of fruits and vegetables! Thank you

Is there a trick to getting my box delivered on time. I have only received it once on the day I requested so far. Why?

I was supposed to receive my first box 4 days ago. It still hasn’t come. I put in a “ticket” for their “customer success team,” but it’s been three days and I haven’t heard ANYTHING. And there’s no number I can call and actually talk to a person. I am at the mercy of their nonexistent online customer service! I would rather deal with the cable company, and that’s saying a LOT!! I wish I had checked their rating on Better Business Bureau before letting them steal $35 from me. Lesson learned! I am canceling right now!

On Sept 28 I was charged for my box but it does not show that it was shipped nor delivered and I did not get it on Oct.1

I’m tired of getting celery and fresh ginger. How much ginger can one household use in a month? And I’ve got celery coming out of my ears. And mangoes! I don’t even like mangos. Hope to see a better mix of things this month or I’m putting future orders on hold.

Hi!!! Is there any way to get help identifying something that came in the box? It’s lettuce like but bitter. No way to know what it is or what to do with it!

Hi Julie! It sounds like you may have gotten frisée, which can be bitter unless it’s cooked. We suggest sautéing it with olive oil, salt, and pepper for a few minutes over medium heat until it becomes tender and warm. Then, we like to serve it with a vinaigrette, bacon, and a soft boiled egg. It’s like the perfect brunch salad!
